Dealing with The Stress of Online Healthcare Courses
What did I get myself into?
The moment you enrol in a healthcare course, you will find yourself asking this very question: WHAT DID I JUST GET MYSELF INTO? I enrolled in a pharmacology degree from one of the best pharmacy technician schools in town. Of course, I used to be enrolled in med school but I found it to be too stressful so I dropped out. My mom thinks that I failed on purpose, but whatever floats her boat. You see, healthcare courses (even outside the scope of a career in nursing or a doctor) are very stressful.
Why are they stressful?
When I wanted to become a doctor, I thought that it was going to be about dissecting people and treating people, but I found out that we did a lot more reading than lawyers and other professions. Your daily lesson plan as a med student required reading a lot of chapters for that particular lesson. I remember reading 3 chapters about respiratory system just because we were going to discuss the pathology behind respiratory ailments. Think of it this way. You end up doing a lot of reading, memorization, and then a lot more reading to be done.
Trivia: Did you know that you need to take the certification exam before you can start your career as a pharmacy technician? More and more states in the USA are pushing for certifications as a major requirement prior to employment apart from having a diploma. A certification exam is given every week by the PTCB in more than 600 different testing centres all across the USA so there’s no way for you to miss out on any of the exams.
How I managed with the stress
When I enrolled in pharmacy technician schools in my local area, I didn’t think of them to be as stressful as med school because I thought pharmacists and pharmacy technicians had it easier. I was wrong. I was very, very wrong. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians have a different medical world of their own, and as such, you need to be very familiar with their world if you want to succeed. This meant that I needed to brush up on my chemistry and biology lessons because part of the learning objectives was to familiarize the effects of different kinds of medicines and drugs on the human body. This did not only refer to how medications can cure ailments but rather their effects when medications are overdosed or allergic reactions.
So how did I deal with the stress?
- Don’t read for hours on end. This was my very first mistake as a med student. I read for 6 hours straight with no rest in between and I ended up learning nothing from what I read. Psychologically, the brain can only process so much information before it becomes fatigued. When your brain becomes fatigued, your body follows suit. You should rest every 15 minutes after an hour of reading. You can even nap for 20 minutes to rest your eyes and to retain the information efficiently.
- When faced with impending burnout, drop everything and get out. Burnout is the feeling of giving up or sudden fatigue for no reason. When this happens, or at least prior to this happening, you should drop what you’re doing and find something relaxing to do. It could be a 2-hour nap or a trip to the gym. Any kind of activity will do as long as it doesn’t remind you of healthcare.
- Set a study period. For pharmacy tech degree pursuers, find the time to study. You don’t need to study for umpteen hours a day just to maximize your learning experience. Study for 5 hours at most with rests in between. Don’t forget that you have a social life and some people who will keep you from becoming stressed.
Appreciate the smaller things in life more often and you will find it easier to deal with the stresses of handling healthcare courses.
