Education for Everyone – A Veteran’s Story towards a College Degree
Just education for our veterans
Our school does not support the war nor does it condone it. we are more concerned over the men and women who’re risking life and limb to protect not the country but the ones they love. As such, our school has always been generous and welcoming of veterans coming back from their tour of duty, and we’ve been generous of providing them with not only financial assistance but also with psychological rehabilitation and other services that they’ve been neglected of. Of the 50 or so veterans that were born from our state, one veteran managed to pull himself from his wreckage and pushed on to become a pharmacist.
Staff Sergeant Jones, a man with a mission
SSGT Jones was a squad member of the Air Force Pararescue unit, so that others may live. With his nursing degree, he was promoted to the ranks of leadership within 6 months after he passed the program. Unfortunately, his tour of duty was not as peaceful as the others. During a routine rescue mission, his Humvee was destroyed by an IED that exploded just a few metres across the road. Whether it was a detonated IED or a faulty one, no one could tell. Jones survived the onslaught, but his CO or commanding officer died. Due to the injuries he attained (a busted eardrum and a torn ligament in his right thigh), he was no longer fit to serve and he was honourably discharged. His struggle didn’t stop there. He fell victim to PTSD and was rumoured to have been depressed and suicidal for weeks after his arrival from Iran. He was sent to us for counselling and rehabilitation and after a few months, he got better.
His pursuits
His desire to go back into the workforce was appreciated, but no hospital would take him in because there were too many nurses. We offered him a scholarship for a 2-year course for pharmacy technology in one of the many pharmacy technician schools in the area. He enrolled in a sister school of ours and this was his journey in one of the best pharmacy technician schools.
What his classmates say about him
Jones, according to his classmates, was an exceptional student. He was respected for his service in the war, and though he’s been the target of every activist in the campus, he’s been known to be resilient amidst the constant jeering from the peace-loving activists. He was known to put others before his needs, and even with his crippled figure, he still manages to help someone up when they slip or pick up the items that were dropped even if it was to his inconvenience.
What his teachers say about him
His teachers have commended Jones for his ability to deliver academic performance that competed with the best of the best. According to them, this was a reflection of military discipline and courtesy, and that more students should be like Jones. In class, he was not afraid to ask questions nor ask his teachers to repeat a certain part of the lecture. One chemistry teacher discussed about the mechanics of Aspirin compounding and Jones found it to be very difficult. He consulted with the teacher after class for the next three days. When his teacher asked him why he asked a lot of questions, he replied “because this is how we were raised in the Air Force. Lives are at stake so you need to get the complete details when you can because one small mistake can cost someone their life.”
Today, he is now a lead pharmacy technician in a veteran’s hospital. He is currently working his way towards a degree that will allow him to enrol in med school.
