A Very peculiar Pharmacist and his Story
Schools and their tales
Pharmacy technician schools, or even all the other kinds of schools in the USA, love to share their war stories, or in this case, stories of their brightest, smartest, and even most peculiar students. This is not so much as an act of shaming, but rather, putting their interesting stories and struggles to light and to serve as an inspiration for students in their respective schools. One such story that we never shared to them is a story of our very peculiar student. We shall call him Amos.
Who was Amos?
Amos didn’t have any weird aesthetic features upon him. In fact, his classmates at our sister pharmacy technician schools dubbed him as good-looking. But it wasn’t his looks that made him peculiar. It was his gift. Amos was diagnosed with OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder at an age of 10 years old when his mother discovered that he couldn’t get out of a room without touching anything inside of it. What was once discovered as a curse turned into Amos’ benefit? Due to his gift, he was a step ahead of the others. Here’s why. His ability to organize his notes combined with his obsession/compulsion to read twice made him a power student. His mother would often force him to sleep because he wound up having to sleep at 3AM just to finish studying for the exams. He graduated as their batch’s valedictorian and got a full ride to any college he chose. Due to his fascination for medications and drugs, he chose to become a pharmacologist.
His educational experience in college
His habits were carried over in college, and his degree in pharmacology was anything but easy. While most students had a hard time catching up, Amos was still ahead above the others due to his gift. He made it a point to read one chapter a night for the next 4 years and he wound up having to write notes for his readings as well. Amos was not selfish. He shared his notes to his classmates, who treated him with respect. Even his teachers sought Amos’ help when it came to creating notes because he was just so good at it.
His pharmacology professor even commented on his gift as one of the best things that he’s seen in the laboratory because of his innate obsession/compulsion to do things the right way. His schematic diagrams and instructional flowcharts for compounding medications were intricate and easy to follow. His efficiency in the laboratory and lecture room drove him to the honour roll again and when he graduated, he received several awards from the school and other benefactors.
We’ve managed to get in touch with Amos after his graduation and we learned that he was already in the UK trying to get his Master’s degree in Pharmacology while working as an assistant researcher in one of the pharmaceutical firms in the country.
A couple of years later, he flew back to the USA where he spearheaded the research task force of his company located in the heart of Washington. Today, he’s now one of the lead researchers for the firm and he’s earning a 6-figure income annually. He also teaches at one of our affiliate schools.
The brand or stigma of a disorder should never be used as a hindrance to greater things. Amos didn’t think of his OCD as a disorder or a disease but as a gift in itself. Our school was inspired by Amos, so we created a scholarship program for people with the same gifts as Amos. We aim to nurture their gift and to help them deal with their gift without having to neglect them of their college education. Amos is also one of the key benefactors for the program and has sponsored 23 individuals over 5 years.
