A Single Parent’s Journey to Pharmacy Technology
I am a single parent and I am a pharmacy technician. This was not the job that I wanted, but because of my daughter, I had no other choice. I had a background in nursing but I wasn’t able to finish the entire undergraduate course and finishing it was out of the question because schools were expensive here. I decided to go look for a scholarship that would lead me into a career in healthcare, and I found one: a scholarship for pharmacology and pharmacy technology courses. I decided to take the high road and got accepted into the program here. I enrolled in the pharmacy technician school recommended by the program.
Thankfully, they credited my nursing units so I was down by 1 year already. I only needed three years to complete the degree. The course was entirely not what I expected. It was more technical than the nursing course that I enrolled in before I had my daughter. I spent hours reading up on the various mechanisms of chemicals and the molecular organization and structure of medications and how they affected the human body, amongst other topics. This was just the first year. The second year was a little bit more painful because of the intensity of the subjects and the volume of the workload. Unfortunately, I got hindered because my daughter fell ill and there was no one to take care of her. The school took note of my situation and recommended me for a transfer to an online college (a sister school, if you will), and the scholarship covered for that one too. I learned my lessons and took my exams while taking care of my daughter. I watched videos on how to prepare general anaesthesia for varying age groups and took the practical tests in the laboratory of the school I used to enrol in.
On the 4th and final year, I was required to undergo an externship or OJT program for 300 hours. I was exposed to the real work of pharmacy technicians and under the guidance of licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Here I apply what I learned and also learned something in the process. Sometime after the 1st year, I found that the course was not that all bad. It was a very interesting program and the career prospects were relatively high (according to my ethics teacher).
After graduating, I took the certification exam and passed it. I also got hired by the hospital where I spent my externship program and I have been under their employ for more than 5 years now. The pay is really good and the hours are awesome. I am currently in the process of finishing up my thesis for my Master’s in Pharmacology and I hope to become a researcher for a military research firm in the state. My daughter’s a bit older now and my mom has volunteered to watch over my daughter if I get the job.
If you’re hesitant to go into pharmacy technology, read my story again and I will tell you the same thing: IT’S ALL WORTH IT.
