I Gave Up Being a Doctor to Become a Pharmacist
You read the title right
Before I became a pharmacist, I was a med school student. I could’ve been a doctor by now, specializing in something other than paediatrics but I found that med school was too much for me. You know how it is. Parents are both doctors. Brother is a doctor. Grandfather also happens to be a retired military doctor. The familial pressure was too much for me, so I tried to become a doctor. I barely survived the first year and the second year got worse. By the time I reached my clerkship program, I just felt burnt out. I dropped out by the time I entered my third year, talked to my parents, and I got their approval to pursue something else.
I wanted to work in healthcare
Even when I quit being a doctor, I still wanted to work in a hospital. After getting counselled by a close family friend, I found out that there was another alternative profession that would fit me: Pharmacist. Not that I didn’t know about the other professions, but I had tunnel-vision when it came to just choosing the profession of being a doctor. I rested for a good 6 months and just in time to enrol at the start of the first semester. Because there were no colleges and pharmacy technician schools here that offered pharmacology, I decided to enrol in an online campus from pharmacy technician schools outside the United States. I was able to cut down the 4-year course into a 3-year course thanks to my educational units from med school. Who would’ve thought that pharmacology had more major
The online schooling experience
People, even my parents, found it weird when I enrolled in an online school. My mom wanted to send me to the actual country where the school was located but I decided against it because it was too much money to spend on. The program was divided into 4 years, at 2 semesters each. I wanted to opt for the trimester but the curriculum didn’t credit my med school units.
Contrary to what the readers may believe, there’s a huge difference between med school and other healthcare courses. It was like going back to square one, even with my current educational background in healthcare. The pharmacology course focused on a lot of things that involved medicines, medications, and its various interactions with the human body. this involved taking subjects that mixed biology and chemistry all at once. We also had a subject that focused on nutrition, metabolism, and reproduction for 2 semesters. The various systems of the human body, like cardiovascular, reproductive, and urinary, had individual subjects. That’s right. We had an entire subject dedicated to learning about one system.
The lessons and the teachers
The teachers were all professionals in their field. For the pharmacology subjects, they were taught by doctors spearheading a pharmaceutical research firm. The medical subjects were taught by doctors, both active and retired doctors. The ethics classes were taught by a retired judge and philosophy author.
The standards of the online school were similar to its real life counterpart. It’s just that the mode of delivering lessons and how the program was built that made it different from its real world counterpart. If you failed in one subject, you were asked to take it again for a maximum of two takes. If you don’t achieve a certain GPA, you will be asked to drop the course.
