A Single Dad’s Success Story
The life of a single father
A single father, or any single parent for that matter, will probably have a difficult time juggling work/school and family obligations. The struggle of not being able to complete schooling and landing a mediocre job is real, and it’s not just being overhyped by the media in some of their movies and TV shows. Being a single parent is difficult, but nothing is impossible. Getting an education and getting a real job are something that single parents all across the country want. Here’s one success story of one of our best students from our online pharmacy technician schools.
Enter Richard (not his real name)
Richard was a 25 year old single dad with a 4-year old toddler. He used to be a student of a prestigious university but he got married at an early age of 21 and was not able to finish his degree in IT. HE currently works as a server maintenance and infrastructure support specialist in one of the local IT firms in the city, but the pay is not good for the 18 or so hours he spend on the job, excluding the on-call hours. just barely above minimum wage, he found out that the job was not paying so well and he can barely make ends meet. He needed to pay for the babysitter a monthly due because he wasn’t available most of the time at home. He talked to one of our career counsellors about his dilemma and he was asked as to what kind of career he was looking for. He only said a few words: “legit hours, legit pay”. The counsellor recommended a career in healthcare, but he didn’t have a degree yet. The counsellor advised him to take up a degree in pharmacy technology, lasting for 2 years with 1 year externship. He said he didn’t have the time to enrol in one, so he was given a list of online pharmacy technician schools to choose from. After choosing one school, he was given the enrolment procedure, the study load, and the financial obligations.
We’d like to keep an eye out for our students, and Richard was one of those students who was special because of his circumstance. He enrolled in a sister school of ours that offered a pharmacy technician degree and we were able to keep track of his progress. The first few weeks was a struggle, given that he was barely present online, but it wasn’t long before he started making a huge leap for progress.
At first, he only completed 2 of the 5 lectures that were given for a particular week. This made it difficult for him to catch up for the next week’s lectures. But soon after, he was able to progress much faster and he breezed through the lectures with ease. The speed in which he’s able to burn through all the readings was amazing. By the end of the first semester, we requested for his presence and asked him how he was progressing.
He confessed that he had a lot of downtime in his work, so he just downloaded all of the lectures that were given that night and read through all of them while at work. He even took the quizzes straight from his laptop (according to him, speed was not a problem because of his company’s dedicated T1 line). By the end of the first year, he got the best grades from the class and succeeded on his second year. He quit his day-job by the time his externship started.
After his externship program, he took the certification exam and got certified. He got absorbed into the workforce by the hospital he spent his externship program in and today, he’s now of the lead pharmacy technicians and after completing his Master’s Degree, he will return to our school to serve as one of the professors here in pharmaceutical database management.
