Q &A with a Registered Pharmacy Technician

A lot of people rarely know about the different professions and career paths found in the healthcare industry. For some of us, we know that majority of the professionals are doctors and nurses but there are also other people working behind the scenes. You have pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, emergency medical transport personnel, laboratory technicians, and other specialists that can be found in the hospitals and clinics and who’re working side by side with doctors. One of the most mysterious and enigmatic professions in the healthcare industry is a pharmacy technician. we know what pharmacists do, so what don’t we know about pharmacy technicians?

We got in touch with a registered professional pharmacy technician in Minnesota and he’s been around for more than 15 years in the industry. We asked him the following questions in the hopes of providing some insight into the career of a pharmacy technician.

What do you do exactly?

I assist the pharmacists in carrying out the tasks necessary for the pharmacy to function and operate. This basically means that I help prepare the medications for patients for daily dispensing and I also help fill the prescriptions of the patients once they leave the hospital. When I was working in a retail pharmacy, I merely filled out the prescriptions and prepared the medicines. In the hospital where I’m working in now, I also prepare various treatments necessary for surgery, cancer medications, and IV fluids.

Where did you go learn all of these?

I went to several pharmacy technician schools Minneapolis Minnesota. I started out with a local pharmacy technician school to get my Associate’s degree then I enrolled in another pharmacy technician school in the next state to get my Bachelor’s Degree. After I passed the certification exam, I went overseas and took my graduate degree in pharmacology where I passed with flying colours. My education was centered on what the program offered, so it honed my medical, clinical, and pharmaceutical skills through frequent training. There are also other programs offered in different locations all across USA

Are you licensed?

Yes I am. I am a certified pharmacy technician from the Institute of Certification of Pharmacy Technicians and I got my license renewed 2 years after that from Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Your pharmacy technician schools Minneapolis, MN will prepare you for the certification exams thoroughly and you don’t have to worry about failing it or not being able to answer all of the items on your first try. When you’re licensed, you also get the highest salary possible for entry level pharmacy techs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s easier to land jobs if you’re certified.

What’s it like to be a pharmacy technician?

It’s tiring. Every day, you have to manually count the pills needed for daily dispensing and this is tiring if you have a lot of patients in the hospital. Liquid medicines are even more difficult because you have to measure them accurately to the millilitre to avoid over dosage. You also have to be wary of customers who’re bringing in fake prescriptions because it’s your job as a pharmacy technician or pharmacist to catch these junkies or drug addicts in the act.

Are there any tips that you would want to share to aspiring pharmacy technicians?

Find good pharmacy technician schools. Learn everything you can from your teachers and your classmates. After that, continue to study and continue to learn. When you’re in the healthcare industry, it’s always good to improve your skills and to continue learning because it’s an evolving industry and technological advancements are made every day.
