I love Online Schools
The educational journey
Before I became a pharmacy technician, I used to be a nursing assistant but couldn’t become a full-fledged registered nurse because I wasn’t able to complete the course. Due to the educational units, I was able to credit all of them in my pharmacology course from any pharmacy technician schools, so the 4 year course dwindled down to 2 ½ years. But given a dire family emergency (i.e. no more babysitter), I was forced to sit one semester out before I could proceed. I asked the school if they had options for a flexible class schedule and they recommended online pharmacy technician schools wherein I could take my remaining units and classes. The following paragraphs are my journey towards my education:
The first few days
Without hesitation, I enrolled two subjects offered in the virtual campus: Advanced Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Ethics. The first few days were kind of weird because I wasn’t used to sitting in front of the computer for very long. I stared blankly at the monitor because there was an individual teaching about the essence of methamphetamine from a medical standpoint and I was not used to the delivery of the lessons, or rather the medium. Other than that, I was distracted a lot. My daughter, bless her little heart, kept on bugging me so I knew that going to class in the morning was out of the question. This went on for a few days before I could set a definite schedule for the classes.
The first week
Nearing the end of my first week, I missed one day of classes because my mother dropped by for a visit. I felt that I was going to be left behind but when I logged in, I saw that my attendance was docked an absence and in one folder were all the lessons for the day. Text files, audio files, and video recording of the teacher while she was teaching the lesson. I downloaded everything and got caught up by the time my daughter went to bed. At the end of the first week, I was able to create a schedule for my virtual classes: 9:00PM onwards for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and 8:30PM to 11:00PM for Tuesdays and Fridays.
The first month
Like clockwork, the schedule worked and I was able to attend my classes regularly with only two absences docked. The lectures were OK and very convenient, but when examinations came in, I had to install a software that allowed instructors to remote login so they can see my desktop and prevent cheating. I couldn’t use Google or switch to any window when the examinations were on-going. This was probably the most impressive feature of all because the proctors were just as vigilant online as they were in a real classroom.
The first semester
The first semester ended with a breeze, and I was enamoured by the convenience of online campuses so I enrolled in 4 more courses (thanks to an overload option). Two of the classes had laboratory sessions, so I had to go to the school to perform the activities. By that time, the school opened a small day-care system for the teachers and I also availed of it so I could take my daughter with me.
The last year
I spent a year in an online campus and had top scores. I was even commended as one of the best students there (just right alongside our batch’s summa cum laude). Today, I am now taking up my Master’s degree from a virtual campus located in the UK.
