I was never a very confident person. Not that there was anything wrong with me, but I just felt like I didn’t want to interact with people. To illustrate it perfectly, I was that person at the party who just stands in a corner, drinks in hand, acknowledges acquaintances but never get into a deep conversation with them, and wait for someone to leave the party so I can also get out. I was what you call a “wallflower”. This was me during my college days and this was me a couple of years before I started to work as a pharmacy technician.
Then I got a job as a pharmacy technician. I chose this job because I never really wanted to deal with a lot of people and I wanted to get into healthcare. Being a nurse went right out the window like an empty bottle at a party. Being a doctor was also out of the question. I scouted for a job in the industry that didn’t involve doing a lot of customer interaction, so I chose to become a pharmacy technician.
I WAS SO WRONG!
Halfway through my semester on my last year and before my externship program, there was a customer service training module. I thought this was just a ruse of some sorts or a fancy way of naming a self-confidence seminar. The training was centred on building rapport with the customer, how to deal with irate customers, and how to talk to them. This was just the first week. The second weeks were more on the practical side of things. The instructor would pretend to be any one of the customer persona they invented and had us role-play. It was painful and I hated the persona of an irate customer. This went on for 2 weeks and then there were other programs that boosted our capabilities to talk to customers and then more role-plays came along until the end of the program.
I remember one particular role-play wherein I had to deal with an irate senior citizen, thanks to my instructor who wore a wig with an attitude. She had berated me for all the wrong reasons, and partly the right reason because I gave her the wrong medication. I then realized that there are customers who will be irate for no reason and that there will be customers who will be irate because you did something wrong which could’ve screwed them over. Outside the script, I apologized to her and gave her the right medication and even gave her a small incentive (something which the instructor discouraged).
When I delved into the OJT program, I worked in a retail pharmacy for 300 hours or roughly 9 weeks of 6 working days at 8 hours per day. I don’t know. I lost count. All of a sudden, everything that was taught at the seminar came into being. There really were irate customers, ignorant customers, and even stupid customers (Yes, I am not supposed to say this, but there are those people). If it weren’t for the training, I’d have bashed my head on the pharmacy counter more than once.
The upside of things
5 years into my profession as a pharmacy technician, I am still that shy person but no longer that “interaction-avoiding” person. Believe me, I don’t like small talk but I am forced to deal with it on a daily basis because of the customers. The customer service training made everything more bearable now.
