A Scholar’s Story of Success in Pharmacology
Not your typical school
A lot of schools give out scholarships for those who’re academically gifted or academically skilled. It’s a given. You get the best students possible to join your student manifest in the hopes of boosting the grade curve up and get the best accreditations possible. State colleges, universities, and even specialised schools like pharmacy technician schools follow this particular method of boosting the grade curve up, but we do things a little differently. Our school is known for giving out scholarships to those who deserve it and to those who need it, and we’ve been able to give out hundreds of scholarships a year to students who need them the most. One such instance is a scholar of ours from a decade ago, who was noted for her hard work and perseverance even with circumstances against her.
Barbara the wonder student
During her time, being a single mom was difficult. You were often ridiculed for it and you were often the target of impromptu prejudice and stereotyping. Barbara was a single mom with a 2 year old kid at a ripe age of 19. That’s right. She got pregnant when she was 17, just sometime after her graduation from high school. She applied for one of our affiliate pharmacy technician schools, but her application went straight for us. It was a video application, similar to what was required of other universities and colleges. When we viewed it, we called her in and she told us more about her life. We knew for a fact that she was living with her mom and her mom was already pulling double shifts at the hospital because of her and her kid. When we got to her high school records, we found out that Barbara was an honour student. Her SAT score was well above average and she was geared for her success. But her circumstances were not so forgiving and she recently got fired from her job as a pharmacist’s assistant because of her educational attainment. Right then and there, we wanted to give her the scholarship and as it turned out, she also wanted to pursue a degree in pharmacology.
She enrolled in our 4-year undergraduate course in pharmacology where she tried to learn everything about what was going on when she was working in the pharmacy. we monitored her progress for the first few weeks and she admitted to us that she was having difficulty with the transition because she couldn’t bear it to be away from her kid for so long. With proper counselling, she was able to get over it and with her in mind and all the other single parents that we would be accommodating in the future, we created a day-care program for students who have children.
She breezed through the first two years without incident. She wasn’t a good student but she wasn’t a bad one either. she did well enough to maintain her scholarship and by the time she was on her third year, we noticed an improvement on her part academically. She started to get straight A’s and even impressed a few of our tenured professors with her work. Like the first two years, her last two years went by without a hitch and she graduated with honours.
We love to keep in touch with our scholars even after they graduated. Barbara is now one of the head pharmacists in a general hospital somewhere upstate. Her daughter goes to our affiliated high school as a scholar. Barbara was also generous to the point that she helps fund the scholarship program for single parents in our college because she believes that single parents still have the right to pursue their college education.
