Pharmacy technician schools are easier than nursing schools

First-hand experience

Nursing schools were my first destination after I graduated from high school. My dad was a nurse. My mother was a nurse. I thought I would make it. I really did. I felt I could take on the world when I entered the doors of the nursing school. I was wrong. I was very wrong.

Over the course of the first two semesters, I felt that my head was about to break from information overload. My parents didn’t want to help me because they thought I was smart enough to figure things out. Why did I find nursing school to be very difficult?

  • It involved taking care of other people. I could barely take care of myself when I scraped my knee on the sidewalk.
  • The job needed good bedside manners. I didn’t have the courage to develop patience needed for the field, and my parents were as patient as they could get.
  • The lessons were so difficult. I was not challenged by chemistry because I excelled in it in high school. I took advanced college courses just for the fun of it. The difficult lessons were all about the human body. I couldn’t handle memorizing all the different nerves found in the human hand.

I gave up on the first semester and I talked to my parents about it. They told me that I should become a pharmacist because I was already good at chemistry. I considered their option and I found some pharmacy technician schools in my area.

Pharmacy technician schools are easier

When I looked at the prospectus, I was amazed by the subjects. Sure, there were some anatomy and biology subjects but most of them involved a lot of chemistry. Mixing medications, creating drugs, and preparing them were things that I wanted to do. I was fascinated by medicines.

After talking to my career counsellor, I was sold. My responsibilities as a pharmacy technician or pharmacist were clear: to prepare prescriptions, prepare medications, count and measure drugs, and even do some patient counselling.

The experience

The learning objectives of every lesson in a pharmacy technician course revolved around developing a student’s technical and practical skill. This included going above theoretical knowledge. The classes are rarely spent inside the classroom because you will find yourself inside laboratories and make-shift pharmacies for simulation. An externship program or on-the-job training program is offered nearing the end of your program.

The lessons are mostly about pharmacology and chemistry, or rather, a beautiful mixture of both. You will find yourself mixing chemicals in order to create medications. For example, you will understand the chemical composition of salicylic acid and why it’s an important component for aspirin.

The lesson objectives are also focused on developing a student’s knowledge on how medicines work through their chemical mechanism. This includes knowing how chemicals affect the human body. Questions like “do expired medicines harm the body” are answered when you enrol in a pharmacy technician course.

This is why I believe that nursing schools are way harder than pharmacy tech schools.
