A Childhood Dream
Once upon a time
If you grew up in a family of scientists, your future is pretty much set. My father, now retired, used to be a chemist for a pharmaceutical company in the USA and my mom was a biologist for another firm in the USA. One Christmas morning, my dad gave me a Chemistry set. You know the one that was being advertised in the TV in the early 90s wherein you could do hundreds of experiments. My mom also gave me a toy microscope that same Christmas, so I was already certain of what they wanted me to become: a scientist.
Growing up
Since then, I’ve had this fascination for chemicals and everything related to science imprinted on me by my parents. My three older siblings did not share the same fascination as I did, so I guess my parents were rooting for me to follow in their footsteps. In school, I excelled in the science subjects. You name it: biology, physics, and even chemistry. In my senior year, our school had a career mentoring or counselling program that showed us our ideal career paths based on our achievements. Seeing my achievements, counsellors left and right advised me to become a doctor or a chemist, but they didn’t feel just right for me. When they asked me what I wanted to do, I told them that I wanted to make medicines that would taste good because all the medicines we’ve had as children were bad. My counsellor recommended that I become a pharmacist, and gave me a list of pharmacy technician schools to show to my parents.
My parents were more than happy about my goals in life and they had me apply for the various pharmacy technician schools on the list. One school accepted my application and this is my journey.
My expectations
When I first got to school, I looked at my syllabus and I was just as shocked to see a lot of subjects dealing with either pharmacology or the human body. I know my goal as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician was to create medications, but I didn’t expect to know more about chemistry and biology in general.
Think of it this way. We were told that certain medications can cure certain ailments. You have aspirin for headaches and other kinds of pain. You have your ibuprofen for body pains. You have your antihistamines for cough and cold, as well as a sleep-inducing agent. But what we don’t know is how these different medications affect the human body as a whole or why they have an effect in the first place. Why couldn’t we just create a generic medication that would cure all ailments? If only it were that simple.
When you enrol in a specialized course like pharmacy technology, you begin to understand why medicines work the way they do, and thus, it’s not as easy to create one simple elixir to get rid of all your ailments. If that were the case, you’d send your system into a complete failure due to the complex reactions of the medicines. Over the 3 years I’ve enrolled in the course, I’ve learnt a lot about medication and I started to relate to the things Walter White said in Breaking Bad. Sad as it as may seem, pharmacists, chemists, and pharmacy technicians are equipped with the knowledge to create opiates and the different kinds of bad drugs.
Today
After I graduated from my course, I took the certification exam and passed it with flying colours. I got hired by my dad’s pharmaceutical company as an associate researcher. I am working my way towards a Master’s Degree so I can get promoted to another position.
