Education Changed His Life and More
Our scholars
We’ve always been proud of our scholars because of their resilience and their never-ending perseverance towards academic excellence. Some of our scholars come from low-income families while there are those that excelled academically in high school so a free ride to our school is always offered to them. Amongst our 100 or so scholars that we’ve helped over the last decade, we’ve come across one particular student who comes from two different spectrums.
Who is Michael?
Michael comes from a broken family and has been known to suffer from depression due to family problems and he also comes from a low income family. His teachers in high school would always take pity on him when they saw his bruises and cuts. But despite all of this, he managed to succeed and do well in his studies to the point that he got an above average GPA score and has been accepted into the honour roll in his senior year. His counsellor talked to him and asked him what he wanted, and he said that he wanted to become a doctor because his late grandfather was a doctor. She later told him to go to our school and inquire about our scholarship programs.
From medical science to medicines
When we met Michael for the first time, we already knew that there was something special about him. When he asked about our pre-med programs, we informed him that we didn’t have a lot to offer but we did have alternatives to healthcare courses. After browsing our curricula, he asked about the pharmacy technology course. We told him that it was a great degree because of the competitiveness of the field and it was a great pre-med course to boot. Before he asked what we thought he was going to ask, we already offered our scholarship to him and the list of pharmacy technician schools affiliated with our college.
His decision
He enrolled in one of the best pharmacy technician schools affiliated with our university and he got a full ride to a 2-year degree in pharmacy technology. His scholarship also paid for the board and lodging, so he already has a place to stay in the campus’ in-house dormitories. Allowance is also provided on a monthly basis, along with a monthly consultation with a counsellor. On his first month, his counsellor reported to us that he was having a hard time adjusting because he didn’t have a lot of friends and that his self-esteem was dropping. To combat this, we’ve decided to let him join one of the extra-curricular organizations found in the school so that he can socialize and have someone other than the counsellor look out for him. He joined the Chemistry Club and the Peer Facilitators Club. The latter is a student-to-student counselling group wherein students can talk to other students about their problem. It did him a lot of good because his temperament improved over the next few weeks.
His journey
After surviving his freshmen year, we received tons of praises from his teachers about how well he’s done and how he’s been consistent in keeping his grades at a level of excellence. He was also praised by his counsellor because he came out of his shell and how he is now one of the lead peer facilitators in the group. He also shares his experiences to other students who’re down on their luck and he’s been an epitome of courage and perseverance. He graduated on time and proceeded to complete the undergraduate degree with added units from an undergraduate degree in pharmacology. This allowed him to not only take the certification exam but also qualify him to enter medical school.
Today, he’s currently on his third year as a med student in one of Boston’s prestigious medical schools.
