A Student’s Experience on Online Schooling
It’s a different experience
If I were to summarize my online schooling experience, it would be these words: IT IS A DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE EXPERIENCE. When you go to online pharmacy technician schools, you are physically present alongside with your classmates in a classroom and listening to a physically-present instructor. In an online setting, even though you are set up in a chat conference type of environment, it feels like you’re the only one taking the lesson and it feels like you’re listening to a recording of an instructor’s lesson for that day. To some extent, these were the majority of my feelings when I first started my online schooling journey in pharmacy technician schools to becoming a pharmacist.
The virtual classroom experience
I enrolled in an online pharmacology degree that lasted for 3 years, thanks to all the credited units from my previous pre-med and med courses. I’ve had a lot of people ask me as to what it was like to learn online and I told them what I am about to tell you:
- The teachers or instructors are real people. On my end, they were professional pharmacists, chemists, biologists, doctors, and even a retired attorney. They are not virtual AI systems or a pre-programmed avatar.
- Online campuses are located within the premise of the actual campus. It’s just that they are equipped to stream/broadcast their lessons, upload files, and even conduct mentoring programs. Online classrooms from the perspective of a teacher involve them having to face a high definition camera with high-end audio device guaranteed to deliver quality audio and video. An IT specialist will then make sure that the online classes are being recorded and broadcasted at the same time.
- The classroom from the students’ point of view looks like a huge chat room with a small video display that shows a live broadcast of the class, or allows you to play a recording of the lesson that was delivered that day. The chat room will also allow you to interact with your classmates, but you won’t be able to interact with your teachers. This is where the one-on-one chat or consultation comes in. After the lesson, the teacher will be on standby to entertain your questions. Take note that they won’t be available 24/7 but they will get back to you once they are online.
- Absences are also noted. Online schools are not so lenient on absences from class either, even with its flexible schedule. The school I enrolled in allowed 3 days to complete the lecture given that week before I will be marked as absent. Within the three days, the lessons (audio files, video files, and text files) will be made available for download or viewing. Once the three days are up, the lecture will disappear.
- There are deadlines that need to be met when you miss an exam. On my end, I was only allowed a maximum of two days to take the make-up exam or else I forfeit the exam and get a grade of 0%.
- Let’s talk about the exam. The online school will prompt you to install remote monitoring software that allows proctors to watch your screen while you take the exam online. In the event of no proctor being available that time, the software will record all of your screen activities and upload it on the class’s server. This basically means you can’t switch windows or view other websites while the software is active. You can’t turn it off either because the exam will not be available if you do. Come to think of it, I think online exams are way stricter than taking it in an actual classroom.
