A Single Mom’s Journey to her Dream Job
A Single mom’s difficult life
As a school, we understand how difficult it is for individuals to pursue a college education. It’s even more difficult to pursue one as a single mother. While the government has great programs that provide financial assistance to single moms, there’s just not enough to provide them for their college education. Our school, and our affiliated schools, try to provide financial assistance to single mothers and father in our local area. over the years, we’ve put hundreds of single parents to school and every single one of them is grateful for the opportunity. But amongst the hundreds of single parents, we’ve come to notice one particular single mom’s journey to a complete college education.
The life of Abigail
Abigail (not her real name) barely managed to complete her high school education after she got pregnant by her boyfriend then. She tried to stay with her boyfriend’s family during her pregnancy but things weren’t working out and she wanted to raise her child on her own. She moved out and went back to California to live with her parents. After she gave birth, she took on a series of jobs for her child and to contribute to her household. She worked in one of the largest retail stores in the USA as a pharmacy clerk for more than 5 years. While she was renewing her contact, the HR told her that she has overstayed her position and the store is obligated to promote her but she doesn’t have the qualifications to do so. Abigail thought that it was the end for her, but the HR department referred Abigail to us and this is her story now.
Abigail goes to school
When we interviewed Abigail, we were surprised at how knowledgeable she was with pharmaceuticals even if she didn’t have any formal training. She said that during her downtime, she did some studying on her own and even took up some online subjects about pharmacology from pharmacy technician schools in the USA. Without a doubt, we gave her a scholarship in our undergraduate degree in pharmacology (a 2-year program with diploma and preparation for the certification exam) in one of the best pharmacy technician schools. She was hesitant at first because she couldn’t afford to leave her job, but her company gave her a paid study leave worth 3 years (apparently, she accumulated her vacation and sick leaves for 4 years).
The fact that she was a single mother didn’t bother Abigail at all. Unlike some of our students here, she was never shy nor possessed a low self-esteem due to her status. In fact, she was quite proud of it. She gained the trust of her classmates even with a 5-year gap. She felt like she belonged there for some reason and she was a happy student. She was also noted to perform exceptionally well in her academics. She took up extra subjects that were outside her degree (elective subjects like Business Ethics and Philosophy of Business) because she wanted the extra credit.
Throughout her 2-year stay, she managed to get into the honour roll with an average GPA of 1.75. she excelled in her pharmacology major subjects and she was well-versed in drug and medicine compounding – a technical skill even professional pharmacists have difficulty with. Upon her graduation, she was advised to take the pharmacy technician certification board and she garnered the #1 spot in the rankings for their batch.
She returned to her work as a pharmacy clerk and was promoted soon after to head pharmacy technician. She stayed with the company for 3 more years before she was absorbed into the research industry. Today, she’s currently taking up her Master’s in pharmacology in one of our affiliate schools outside the country.
