The Daily Routine of a Full Time Parent and Pharmacist
Before I was a pharmacist
I have been warned/advised/informed by my parents, friends, and peers that it’s going to be difficult to pursue a career in healthcare as a single parent. The hours are unstable, the pay’s barely good, and the stress is just too much. You go to work tired because you haven’t rested yet from that 16-hour shift you just pulled because your officemate didn’t go to work. The shift schedule is just one of the many reasons why I didn’t pursue a career as a nurse, but I did want to pursue the next best thing: a pharmacist. Today, I am a pharmacist but before I became one, I had to go through what I’d like to call a journey.
The educational journey
Believe it or not, I was one of those college students who already had a family to raise. I went back to school after my second daughter was born and thinking that my marriage was going to last long, I decided to pursue a degree in pharmacology. Sadly, things didn’t do so well. Long story short, wife left me and I gained custody of the kids. Juggling school and 2 kids were not easy, and I think a lot of people can relate to my experiences. The first 2 years were hectic because I had a weird schedule, and hiring a babysitter was out of the question because I had no extra money. I asked my mom to help out and she went to my rescue without a second thought. She watched over the kids while I was in school. My last 2 years went without a hitch, and I graduated with honours.
A pharmacy technician’s daily routine
When I graduated, I didn’t become a pharmacist instantly. I was hired to work as a pharmacy technician because the hospital wasn’t hiring and the next hospital that hired pharmacy techs was 2 states over. I decided to go for the position rather than to leave my 2 children behind. It wasn’t what I expected because I thought a pharmacy technician was an underling of sorts who was just going to be bossed around by the pharmacist. I was wrong because a pharmacy technician is an assistant of sorts, but not in a secretarial manner. They help run the pharmacy alongside the pharmacist and are in-charge of preparing the medications or medicines as prescribed by the doctor to their patients, then they file the prescription to say that it has been filled, and then they input it in the pharmacy database as part of their customer/patient records. This is done for every single patient or customer. The tedious part here is the preparation of the prescription. You have to manually count the pills that are needed by individual patients, weigh the liquid medicine or drug, and even compound medications for a patient’s or doctor’s needs. I was a pharmacy technician for 3 years and I think I counted a hundred pills a day minimum, and this was just on the hospital pharmacy. I worked in retail pharmacy for a year before that and I counted like 300 pills a day.
A pharmacist’s daily routine
As a pharmacist, I spend most of my time overlooking what the pharmacy techs are doing and helping them out when there’s just too many prescriptions that need to be filled. I also man the cash registry and I also have admin access to the patient database. The only thing that’s different between me and a pharmacy tech is the task of managing people.
