A Tale of Two Career Options
After I graduated from high school, I wanted to become a doctor. I wanted to help people become better and I was inspired by my father and grandfather who were both doctors. Needless to say, I packed up by bags and went on my way to take up a pre-med course before going on to med school because my father said that getting a pre-med course would help build a solid foundation for medical knowledge. Even though my father was a doctor, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth so travelling to other states was out of the question. I had to enrol in a community college and take up a degree in nursing.
A couple of months I got burnt out. Too much studying on the first few months got to me and I had suffered from anxiety and stress. My father pulled me out after the first semester because he felt that I wasn’t ready. During my study hiatus, I talked to a friend of mine who had a pharmacist for a brother and we got to talking about his job and I found it interesting. I told my dad that I would try pharmacology and he said that it was a wonderful option. Besides, I had to make use of my A+ in chemistry and biology from last semester.
Sadly, I didn’t get to enrol in a pharmacology course because it was unavailable in our area and I had to enrol in a pharmacy technician course in another campus (which was basically the same thing, but with a different curricula). My first option was to enrol in pharmacy technician schools Daly City California, but given that I had no money, I made do with what I had.
First two years and probably 6 semesters of my degree, it was very tiring. You spend up to 5 hours in the classroom every day and probably close to 12 hours in the laboratory every week. The first time I encountered a dead body for human anatomy class, I fainted. In my first pharmacology major, I mixed the wrong chemicals for creating aspirin and I ended up burning a hole in my lab coat. I succeeded with flying colours throughout the last 2 years.
In my last year, I entered into an externship program at my father’s hospital where I worked as a pharmacy technician intern and under the supervision of the pharmacist. I got to do a lot of tedious jobs like counting pills, measuring medications for inventory and dispensing, managing patient prescriptions, and even some data entry tasks. 300 hours of the repetitive tasks were not so easy on me, but I got through it. I graduated and got my certification and diploma two weeks after my graduation. I built my occupational experience and received additional training as a pharmacy technician at my dad’s hospital and the rest is history.
Now, I am up for a renewal for my license and I am now working my way towards a Master’s Degree in pharmacology in one of the best pharmacy technician schools Daly City CA so I can become a pharmacist. Of course, I’m still happy with being a pharmacy technician. Do I regret not being a doctor? No because pharmacists and pharmacy technicians save lives too.
