What It’s Like to be a Pharmacy Technician
What am I?
I wanted to become a pharmacist, but the job vacancies in the hospital don’t include pharmacists so I settled for a pharmacy technician profession. I graduated with a degree in Pharmacology but I am working as a pharmacy technician. as a pharmacy technician, I am that person you see running around the pharmacies getting your prescriptions ready as waiters would prepare the orders of their customers. The person inside the office or running the cash register is the pharmacist, or who we refer to as our boss. She is in-charge of checking the prescriptions and making sure that everything is OK before we prepare the medications prescribed.
What’s the work environment?
The work environment in the healthcare industry is hectic, not just for the nurses and doctors, but for everyone involved. Administrators are lucky enough to get out after an 8-hour shift, but medical staffs like me count an 8-hour shift as a gift. At best, I spend at least 12 hours inside the pharmacy. the only reason why I’m here is that the pay is very good. On my first year, I earned close to $30,000 after taxes. On my fifth year, I am now making $36,000.
Everything in the pharmacy rhymes with tedious. You count pills, weigh liquid medicines, and measure powdered drugs on a daily basis. Even in my externship program, I counted at least thousands of pills for dispensing inside a 300-room hospital. On top of the counting and measurement, you need to input all of the prescriptions inside the hospital database for insurance purposes and for records keeping.
Did I mention that there are peak times in pharmacies wherein you have to deal with hundreds of customers? I kid you not. Between 11AM and 12NN, I find myself dealing with a lot of people that want their prescriptions filled. This means that you have to be quick and accurate. You can’t afford to screw up or slow down. But things are not all bad. After the peak hours, there are certain downtimes too where we can get some rest before the next one starts.
My memorable experiences
Normally, pharmacy technicians wait for clearance from pharmacists before they can either prepare a prescription or to compound medications. One time, an emergency room surgeon requested a concoction of general anaesthesia for a 50-year old male patient. I knew this was urgent because he came from the ER. The pharmacist was out and the other pharmacist was on the other side of the hospital, so I went with my gut instinct and called in the other pharmacist. I told her of the scenario and she gave me the go signal. I went into the laboratory to prepare the medication and this was also my first time to prepare anaesthetic compounds because the school didn’t give me a chance to do one. The concoction worked and I got praised from the surgeon.
A continuing experience
When you’re in the healthcare industry, it’s imperative that you continue to better yourself. This means that you need to pursue continuing education in the hopes of gaining new skills that will be useful in your career or profession in health care. I pursued my Master’s degree when I was asked to renew my certification and I am close to finishing it now.
