How I Juggled Work and Online Schooling

The eternal struggle

If I had known about online schooling way back then, I could’ve sworn my life would’ve been a lot easier. It’s hard to juggle school and work. Believe me, I tried. During my college years, I worked as a part-time pizza waitress just because I wanted some extra money so I can get home for the holidays. Apparently, it was difficult to juggle work with school because I took a nursing degree. How I managed to survive it, I didn’t know. I juggled work and school for a year and a couple of years ago, history repeated itself. This time, I was already working as a registered nurse and I was taking up an online undergraduate degree in pharmacy technology.

The dilemma

Before I enrolled in online pharmacy technician schools, I had to convince myself that this was the best route. It was either enroll in an online school and continue working as a nurse, or quit my job as a nurse and then go to some other state. The former turned out to be more viable because I didn’t have relatives where the pharmacy technician schools that had pharmacy technician courses were located, and I didn’t want to quit my job as a nurse.

So I enrolled in an online school and I got my academic units from my nursing degree credited. The major subjects were not credited because the school felt that I needed to take them again. Another reason why my major subjects were not credited is because it didn’t serve as prerequisites for the pharmacology courses.

What made it easy and difficult?

Juggling work and online schooling was both easy and difficult at the same time.

It was easy for me because the lectures were easily relatable and understandable thanks to my background in healthcare. It was also easy because the class schedules were flexible, so I could work and study at the same time.

It was difficult for me because of the class schedule. Sometimes, I wound up working a 16-hour shift so I missed out on a lot of classes that were held at night and in the morning, but thanks to the availability of the lectures, I was able to download them and save them on my laptop.

How I juggled work and school

So how did I juggle work and online schooling? First and foremost, you need to establish a study period wherein you can study undisturbed. On my end, my study period was scheduled by the time I got home sometime around 8PM onwards. I also had to adjust because I ended up with overtimes from work. But regardless, you still need to establish your own working and studying schedule that doesn’t create conflicts between both.

The next thing I did was to study during my vacant period. When I was working as a nurse, I brought my notes and lectures with me to work. When I was stuck in the nurses’ counter, I just watch the videos or read the notes that were uploaded last night or the day before. Even outside work, I brought my lectures with me. I had three subjects that focused on nutrition and metabolism, so I read the chapters and watched the videos while I was doing the laundry or while I was relaxing in a coffee shop.

The bottom line here is to maximize your time. The class schedules and their flexibility are intended to give students of online schools a chance to really learn and enhance their knowledge.

Stop worrying about the next position, or you’ll have the ability to get, and have a safe and stable occupation you could rely on for several years to come in Alabama.
